Sframe // Luce e Volume was born out of Tedesco's personal experience living in a seaside town in Sicily, where light pollution near the coast hindered the ability to enjoy both the stars and a drink at local bars and restaurants. With Sframe, Tedesco aimed to create a design that would allow people to appreciate the night sky while enjoying their favorite outdoor establishments.
The strength and uniqueness of Sframe lie in its simple yet versatile design. The stainless steel square frame, measuring 2x2 cm, is meticulously welded to create a sturdy structure. Integrated LED lights are recessed within the frame, providing a warm and low light that illuminates the ground without disturbing the surrounding environment. The top of Sframe is made of a reinforced welded mesh, adding to its durability and functionality.
With dimensions of 50cm in length, depth, and height, Sframe can be used as a stool or a side table, making it a versatile addition to any outdoor space. Its modular design allows for scalability, with the option to add more modules for increased lighting, seating, or table space. This ensures that each product provides enough light for one or two people while maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment.
The production process of Sframe // Luce e Volume took place entirely in Agrigento, Sicily, and lasted approximately three weeks. Prior to production, the design underwent a month of research and development to find the best materials, technology, and size for the project. The result is a minimalistic yet highly functional design that combines form and function seamlessly.
Alice Tedesco and her team, including master blacksmith Calogero Principato and electrician Giovanni Pitruzzella, overcame various challenges during the design and realization of Sframe. The main challenge was to create an outdoor furniture piece with integrated lights that reduced light pollution while optimizing material consumption and production time. The team's focus on functionality and simplicity resulted in a design that not only addresses the issue of light pollution but also enhances the overall outdoor experience.
Sframe // Luce e Volume has garnered recognition for its innovative design. In 2017, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial standards. Sframe's integration of industry best practices and its contribution to a better world through reduced light pollution make it a standout design.
With its unique combination of lighting, furniture, and design, Sframe // Luce e Volume is a testament to Alice Tedesco's creativity and commitment to addressing real-life challenges. This locally handcrafted and customizable design allows people all over the world to enjoy the beauty of the stars while indulging in their favorite outdoor activities.
